A zombie thread is an inactive conversation that resurfaces, confusing routing, ownership, or automations.
Zombie Thread describes an email conversation that’s been quiet for weeks or months, then gets a sudden reply. It often causes confusion: the wrong owner gets notified, the ticket reopens without context, or automation sends a weird follow-up. Good inbox systems treat zombie threads carefully by re-checking assignment rules, refreshing context summaries, and optionally asking for confirmation before firing sensitive automations. This term is relatable, and it helps explain why “thread age” should be a real signal in routing and workflow logic.
