For hotels and B&Bs: what’s different
Travellers read the owner’s replies as closely as the reviews. A thoughtful reply to a mixed review can win a booking that the review alone would have lost, and a warm, specific thank-you shows the kind of host you are.
Hotel reviews usually mix praise and a complaint: great breakfast, thin walls. The best replies thank the guest for the good part by name, deal with the complaint honestly, and mention something they’ll enjoy next time.
What works
- Reply on every platform you’re listed on: Google, TripAdvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests all read replies.
- Mention one detail from the stay so it doesn’t read like a template.
- For noise or room complaints, say what you can do next time, like a quieter room on request.
- Sign off with a real name and role. “Anna, Owner” reads better than “The Management”.
- Don’t copy the same reply across platforms. Reviewers on each site see the others.
Replies to a mixed hotel review
Thank you, Lucy, for staying with us and for the lovely words about breakfast. We’re sorry the street noise kept you up. Our rooms at the back are much quieter, and we’re happy to put you in one next time if you ask when you book. Hope to welcome you back. Anna, Owner
Lucy, thank you! It’s great to hear Tom’s pancakes were a hit. Sorry about the Saturday street noise. Just ask for a garden-side room when you book next and we’ll make sure you sleep well. Anna, Owner
Thanks, Lucy. Glad you loved breakfast. Sorry about the noise; ask for a garden room next time and it’s much quieter. Anna, Owner

Questions
Should I reply to five-star reviews too?
Yes. A short, personal thank-you shows future guests you read every review, and it encourages more people to leave one.
How do I reply to a complaint about something I can’t fix, like location?
Be honest and helpful: acknowledge it, then say what you can offer, like a quieter room or parking tips.
Does it work for TripAdvisor and Booking.com?
Yes. Copy the reply and paste it into whichever platform the review is on.
